Our Organization
Organization of John Howard Societies in Canada
The John Howard Society is a network of offices across Canada and the Northwest Territories committed to "effective, just and humane responses to the causes and consequences of crime." Every office is a stand-alone charity registered under the laws of the province in which it is located. The national office — The John Howard Society of Canada — is a charity registered under the federal Not-For-Profit Corporations Act and is governed by a volunteer board of directors elected to the national board by the provincial or territorial member where they reside. Each provincial and local office operates independently -- and each is governed by a volunteer board of directors.
Division of Labour Between the National and Local Offices
The John Howard Society of Canada is the national policy voice for the provincial and local offices across Canada. It is the role of the JHSC to advocate for "effective, just and humane responses to the causes and consequences of crime" to senior public servants, cabinet ministers, senators and members of parliament.
Service delivery, programming, housing, etc., happens at the front end: in the local offices in communities across Canada.
